Murtha, recruiting…
Starting offensive tackle Marc Murtha will go in for surgery on a meniscus issue a week from Thursday and they’ll also look at his ACL at that time. If it’s torn – they’re not completely sure on that yet – he’s in for an extended recovery period. At any rate, he’s not going to be back in the lineup any time soon. As he told me on Tuesday “I’m hoping between now and next week somebody invents a way to get me back on the field right away.” Derek Chancellor, a 6-5, 290-pounder from McCook, Neb., will be starting in Murtha’s place at right tackle.
Regarding USD recruiting efforts….
A few dudes they’re in the trenches on…. Luke Worden, a defensive back from Scottsbluff, Neb…. Jon Hander, the Washington quarterback; Zach Skibinski, a defensive end from Sioux City Heelan; Colin Mertlik, position to be determined, from Blair, Neb. And Matt Christensen, a wideout from Racine, Wis., who plays at Wilmot Union….They’ve all been offered. Success or failure on several of them will initially be contingent on the Big 10 and Big 12 staying out of the way. They will, of course, be dealing with other FCS schools as well in most cases.
